Taiwanese pianist Susan Cheng will headline the Wallingford Symphony March 19 Brahms Concert at Choate’s Paul Mellon Art Center. Susan is on the faculty of Hart School, CCSU and Choate.

Maestro Phil Ventre, will lead the Wallingford Symphony’s interpretation of Brahm’s Piano Concerto and Symphony No. 2, March 19 at Choate Rosemary Hall’s Paul Mellon Art Center. The Piano Concerto No. 1 in D Minor, Op. 15 offers a virtuosic piano display, an imaginative recreation by the violins and violas representing mystical spirituality and oboes and violoncelli sounding like bagpipes. Written when Brahm was twenty, he was paying tribute to a friend who was struggling with mental illness.

Brahms’ Symphony No. 2 in D Major, OP. 73 was written in three months in Austria. The piece is very relaxed, containing a wealth of beautiful and heartfelt melodies with a clear and transparent orchestration. French horns provide a pastoral mood and leads to a solo. An oboe soloist presents the theme with the woodwinds and strings as orchestral trios. Brahms completes the piece with a joyful theme using trumpets and trombones.
